At this point in my life, I feel like I am wandering in the desert with the Israelites. It is a time of waiting. I am on the cusp of my Promised Land, but relegated for the time being, to … Continue reading
Before we check out Romans 1:19-20, sit with God a moment and pray that He speaks to you tonight. Pray that He reveals Himself to you in a new way.
Thank you! If you read the title of this blog you may have noticed the idea of God’s “invisible attributes.” I just love this phrase. Ponder that for a moment with me. What does it mean to you? What comes to mind when you think of God’s invisible attributes? Being a visual person myself, I think of things of the heart – literally, things you cannot see, like God’s character, his love, mercy, kindness, etc… But…. This is not what Paul meant in Romans 1:19-20. Please check these verses out and sit with them and God for a moment.
For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.
Did you notice what Paul declares God’s invisible attributes to be?
His Eternal Power
God is eternally powerful; He has eternal dynamis: inherent power, power residing in a thing by virtue of its nature, or which a person or thing exerts and puts forth, power to perform miracles. The term dynamis speaks to the dynamic view of all life in the cosmos; it is a cosmic principle (TDNT 187). God’s essence is power. He has all authority and all power of all the cosmos and everything in it. Did you catch the last part of that definition? God has the power to perform miracles. The implications blow my mind. In the Old Testament, people did not have the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, so God showed His hand through outward miracles: the parting of the Red Sea, manna from heaven, stopping the sun, tearing down the walls of Jericho, and on and on… In the New Testament, however, disciples of Christ now have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which means that God’s focus is now internal. Instead of working outward miracles (which He still does on occasion), His focus is inside – instead of feeding you manna from heaven, He is feeding you peace, joy, and power in the Holy Spirit. Instead of parting the waters, He is raising you up in a life of righteousness after being dead in sin. In Christ, YOU are the miracle. He takes your temper and gives you long-suffering patience, He takes your judgments and gives you compassion, He takes your apathy and gives you empathy, He takes your chaos and gives you peace.
Fill in the blank:
He takes my ____ and gives me _____.
His power is limitless and you are the most miraculous part of His creation. ❤
His Divine Nature
Do not miss this: the Greek word for “divine,” is theiotēs; it means that this God is God in the absolute. He is Sovereign, creative, and self-revealing. I love that first word: absolute. Truly, to we His children, isn’t He everything? Our strength, our hope, our future, our life. Beautiful One, not only is He everything, but He is KING over everything: He is SOVEREIGN. In our darkest times, we need to know to the depths of our being that there is a God in heaven and…
HE IS SOVEREIGN.

the Things that Have Been Made
He’s creative. As one who isn’t, I am astounded by creativity. I am in awe of those who can create beauty. The most genius of artists in the history of the world are but mere shadows of the Master Creator.
Psalm 19:1-6 ESV
The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
2 Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words,
whose voice is not heard.
4 Their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.
Job 12:7-10 ESV
“But ask the beasts, and they will teach you;
the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you;
8 or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you;
and the fish of the sea will declare to you.
9 Who among all these does not know
that the hand of the Lord has done this?
10 In his hand is the life of every living thing
and the breath of all mankind.
To whom has God revealed Himself?
Every. Living. Being.
How can you look at creation, the wonder of it, the magnitude, the ingenious, the beauty, and not see it’s Creator?! God is SHOUTING His being, His character, His love, His eternal power, His divine nature. God is eternally powerful over all creation, over you, over the kings and powers of this world, over your life, your family, your boss, your children, your church. HE. IS. SOVEREIGN. Not even the sparrow falls without His knowing… How much more does He care for you? Open your eyes to see your Creator and allow Him to reveal Himself anew to you and speak His essence into your heart.
